Display ad for the Mackie Onyx-i line mixers. This was a portion of a larger campaign put together by myself and the rest of the Mackie marketing team. It included a teaser ad which revealed just the corner of the mixer and a headline “don’t be afraid of the dark.” From there we ran a contest for people to guess what the new product was. While the contest was happening, we made very ominous-looking black packages containing the mixer, a ransom note and a home-burned DVD with a sharpie-scralwed “PLAY ME NOW” written across it. These packages were sent to prominent journalists, bloggers and forum moderators as early review units.
The DVD contained a video with product manager James Woodburn in a nylon mask and voice distortion talking about the mixer, but also behaving like someone who’d taken a hostage. To be fair, he did have our social media manager’s Chihuahua, but Rosita was never in any real danger 😉
The contest winner got a 1640-i and was the first person of the public to learn what the item was. He guessed “Bacon.” That’s why he won. Over at Mackie we were pretty easily entertained. 🙂
